Omar has a question
Well there was one question I could get an answer to. The one that really bothered me the most. Why did Betty ask about my husband? I grabbed my purse and opened the door and smacked right into Omar.
âOh, Iâm so sorry Omar.â
âNo, itâs my fault. I was just about to knock.â Really? He never knocked.
âMmm, so Holly, I was wondering if you had some time later, if I could talk with you. I had something I wanted to ask you.â He ran his hand through his hair awkwardly.
Iâm pretty sure I knew what he wanted and it wasnât going to happen. âWell, Iâm on my way out right now.â His face kind of dropped and that part of me that insists on being polite to everyone kicked me. âLook, how about Monday?â I said, fishing my keys out of my purse and pulling my office door closed behind me.
âI was really hoping we could meet sooner. Itâs kind of important.â On the other side of the office I could see Joe on the phone. He seemed agitated about something. Omar noticed my distraction and cleared his throat. âUm, yeah, Mondayâs fine. Iâll see you then.â Then added, âdrive safe.â
âUm, thanks. I will.â What the heck was that about, drive safe? As I turned and walked away I swore he was staring at me but as I turned the corner and glanced back, the only one in my view was Joe.
Do you ever have a constant stream of thoughts going through your head that you canât shut off? That was my brain on the way home. Travisâs comment about Amos not leaving a cable loose resonated through my brain. Did Omar do something to my car? And if so, why? Now that I knew he used to be a mechanic, did he have something to do with Amosâs death? This new thought was pretty frightening as he worked with me. Maybe I shouldnât go into the office alone anymore. Iâm usually a fairly good judge of character but I definitely didnât see that coming. Could Omar be a killer?
Was that Carolâs truck Amos was referring to when he said he pulled one out because the battery was dead? Why would Carol get her truck stuck in the mud she knew was there and what was she doing in the dark with the lights on for so long, the battery died? Sure, she has animals, but I donât think they eat in the dark. Was she hiding something? Her husbandâs body? She did hesitate when I asked about the bones. Naw, it couldnât be her. For one thing, I donât think sheâs smart enough to pull off a murder and what would her motive be? What would Omarâs motive be?
I pulled up the drive to Bettyâs house. The weeds were getting higher. Iâd never noticed them before but the new tub planter was definitely getting devoured by the fluffy yellow heads of wild mustard surrounding it. Betty opened at my second loud knock with a sigh.
